Alpha lipoic acid (also known as thioctic acid) is a sulphur-containing compound that the body produces naturally, but only in small amounts.

First isolated from liver tissue in the 1950s, it has since become a proven component of antioxidant therapy concepts, valued for its ability to help neutralize free radicals and regenerate other key antioxidants such as vitamins C and E. 

What sets alpha lipoic acid apart from many other antioxidants is its dual solubility: unlike other antioxidants, it is both water- and fat-soluble, allowing it to efficiently cross cell membranes and even the blood-brain barrier.
